The Long Awaited Shop

With the arrival of Thanksgiving came the backhoe.  Our neighbour, Dave, dug the hole for the shop and he and Jim prepared the footing and then erected the cribbing and supervised the concrete pour.  The shop, like the house, will have a walk out with a 9' ceiling.  The idea is that the basement can be used for mechanical stuff and the main floor will be for woodworking.

Jim was hoping to, not only, get the basement in but also to get the floor down but 60 cms of snow and bitter cold has indicated that winter is here to stay.  After being forced to build the house during the winter, bad memories flooded back. So, Jim is quite willing to wimp out and wait for spring to continue.  So to stay busy, it's back to the basement!!

Honey...It's Time We Talked About The Basement

Jim started the basement during the summer and has nearly finished the main room.  After installing 27 pot lights and 2 light fixtures, you almost need sunglasses. He still has the ceiling to install in the storage room and then it will be done.  Meanwhile, the bathroom has all the electrical done and Jim is about to crawl around in the crawl space to install the plumbing. Then on to the bedroom.

Moose?!!

A couple of days ago we had a series of small thunderstorms pass through right around supper time.  Jim and I were out in the sunroom enjoying the spectacle when two young moose ran past the house.  They were making a terrified, bee line for the trees that border the south edge of our subdivision.

New Trees

Friends of ours offered up some trees that they had growing in their yard.  Of course, we managed to arrange transplant day to be the same as the day that Bob was arriving for a visit.  The poor man had hardly finished his supper and we rushed him off to dig trees out and then replant them in our yard.  We managed to sucessfully plant 3 Maple trees, 5 Maydays, 2 Mountain Ash and 2 Red Osier Dogwood.  10 of last years poplars did not make the winter but, as we planted extra, we can replace them.  All of the shrubs survived and we even have one lilac that has produced flowers.

Lights, Flooring...OK That's As Far As We Got

After painting, Jim installed the light pictured, which will hang over the ping pong table.  There is a complimentary one on the other side of the room which should end up being a sitting area. Sun Glasses must be worn at all times when in the basement as these ceiling fixtures, are in addition to the 29 pot lights.  Thank heavens Jim divided them up amongst several switches.   The flooring has been installed on the rec room and storage room.  Now that summer has arrived, the bulk of our time will be spent outside but when it rains, the trim can be put on and then the junk moved out of the bedroom and bathroom areas so that work can begin on them.

Basement primed

Spent Saturday priming the drywall.

This is a picture of the click flooring we will be putting down.  They are 15.5" by 15.5" embossed finish tile, with a marble look to them. Aurora Eclipse "Quarried Stone" laminate tiles. I am going to try and put them down on the diamond.  Wish me luck!

Winter fun!

We took a break one weekend and experienced the fun of toboganning again  As you can see we had varying degree of success. We did better when we moved to the west side of the house.  We really need help from the neighbourhood kids to pack the snow down so us old sluggers have an easier time of it.

New Year Project

Well we are continuing with our project. Sorry about failing to post during the fall period.
We completed the framing of the walls in the basement.
We completed the wiring and installation of 27 pot lights.
Everything has been inspected and passed.
Over Xmas period completed the drywall boarding.
We are 75% complete on the first coat of drywall mud.
Hope to be to paint stage by 1 Feb.
Then it is install flooring and trim getting ready to start the spare bedroom and bathroom in March, just in time to move back out doors and the back yard landscaping and garden making.
I must be very wicked as there does not appear to be any rest soon.
